Freaky Friday
2008 May 16
This is truly worthy of freaky friday! A family went to view their beloved grandma who had passed away and to their horror, they did not recognize the woman in the casket! Yes, the wrong woman was in the casket! And not only was it the wrong woman, but their beloved grandmother had been buried in another woman’s grave earlier that day! Freaky! And not only freaky but very unfortunate and frustrating for that family!
Here’s another freaky. Hundreds of people in Austria volunteered to be photographed naked in a stadium by photographer Spencer Tunick. Apparently this guy likes to photograph mass nudes! Oh ya it’s FREAKY! Hope your friday is freaky in a good way!

That Tunick guy does those all the time. He has done one in Grand Central station! It is very weird, and he’s crying all the way to the bank.
Here’s a good discussion to think about…..I look at those pictures he does, and I don’t see anything inherently wrong with them. They are nude people from afar. What I have noticed as I talk to others about “nudes” is that there is definitely an American thing about nudity. We see a nude person, and it’s immediately construed in some sexual way. I don’t see it as sexual so much as immodest and tasteless.
That is why you will hear people from other countries talk about how they can spot Americans at nude beaches. They are the ones oogling at the nude women. They see a sexual object…and I honestly think….that has a lot to do with pornography and how saturated it is in our country. Yes, other countries have pornography, but they don’t have it saturated in everything, and the people can discern between seeing a nude woman as a nude woman, and a nude woman in a girlie magazine.
I don’t know….I feel chatty suddenly….I am not completely sold on my view. So no jumping all over me. I would love to just chat about this…..
Angela,
Apparently this guy likes to photograph mass nudes!
Why is this man not in wont of a new profession? And 1800 people posing nude should be more skin than even a dermatologist can handle, yowzas!!
amg,
It is interesting to me that once the Fall in Genesis took place, Adam and Eve hid themselves because they felt shame that they were naked, the Lord in turn clothed them.
I feel nudity should have no place within the public square- it is completely inappropriate…I would not make Godless countries (no America is not Godly either) as the plumbline for ethics. The fact that nudity has become normative in other countries only proves to me a depreciation in morality.

AM, my initial intent in highlighting the nude photography was the creepiness of it! I’m sorry but don’t those women realize that there are inevitable a bunch of creepy pree-verts in the crowd who are only there to oogle all the naked women? YUCK! Freaky! But you’ve raised an interesting question…is it moral to pose naked or to take photos of naked people for “art” or to view naked photos that don’t seem “inherently wrong”. I have to disagree that that Americans are the only ones with a “thing for nudity”. I don’t know if you traveled overseas (specifically Europe). But I’ve spent some time in France, Italy and Switzerland. In France especially porn is part of daily life. There are bill boards all over the place with “soft porn” and I stumbled across porn in places that you wouldn’t exepect. One day while visiting Le Sacre Coeur, I was looking for some postcards in a touristy area and saw quite a bit of pornagraphic post cards. I visited missionaries in France and they said one of the hardest things to adjust to was the french obsession with nudity…nude beaches and parks. And the frequency of pornagraphic photographs/billboards placed in public areas. I also had a friend who spent time in Romania and was frequently groped and fondled in public!!! She was so truamatized by the experience that she had to come back to the States for intense counseling! Nudity and porn is NOT an American “thing”. If anything Europe is always a few steps ahead of us in this area! I agree with Scribe that other godless countries are not the standard that we should look to! Before the Fall, yes nudity was pure and sinless. But immediately after the Fall, covering the body was necessary and God didn’t tell them not to. IN fact throughout the Bible nudity is considered inappropriate. I think that also the fact that you are a women affects your take on this. Us women just don’t “get off” on nudity. But for some reason men do…well I guess it’s the way they are wired. What you may see as “not inherently wrong” may be a major stumbling block for a man. I am open to your thoughts on this! Thanks for raising some interesting points!
Angela
I agree with everything you both have said. Yes, the Bible is nothing but clear on immodesty, men and women see nudity very differently and struggle differently, public nudity has no place in society at all, etc. Like I said, it is nothing but tasteless, and that is putting it mildly regardless of how you view nudity sexually.
Like I said, I am not sold on my view, but just want to explore it.
As I have thought about this, maybe it’s just my wishful thinking. I wish we could not be post-fall. I wish we could look at a nude human being and appreciate it more in a non sexual way. When I see Victorian nude portraits, they are just so beautiful. I see God’s creation in the nude body and I see the artist’s rendition of God’s creation, and I think it’s beautiful. But it is not realistic at all to think all of us can think that way or respond that way. We are post fall. Nudity and sexuality go hand in hand. Sigh….I do think mass nudity in such odd positions in such odd places is just flat out freaky, hence Freaky Friday.
I think it’s just wishful thinking.
Again, I absolutely agree with everything both Scribe and Angela have said.
